A Major Airline Company

Modjoul has been working with a major United States Airline, with its headquarters located in the southeast. The airline, along with its subsidiaries and regional affiliates, operate over 5,400 flights daily and serves an extensive domestic and international network that includes 304 destinations in 52 countries on six continents. As Modjoul’s first customer they have used the Modjoul SmartBelts for more than 18 months.

Key Insights

As a proof of concept, the airline equipped 25 material inspectors with the Modjoul SmartBelt to understand their employee safety risks. Generally speaking, a material inspector’s day consists of examining and inspecting parts and materials for wear and defects along with ensuring the conformance with work orders. Several issues immediately became evident:
  • The airline used the outlier report to coach one employee whose data showed many more 60+ degree bends compared to his peers. This individual muscled through his lifts as opposed to executing them as he had been trained to.
  • The airline calculated the expected bends per day of the position and the expected bends greater than 60+ degrees. They used these benchmarks to understand the overall riskiness of the job function and which employees needed further coaching.
  • The airline evaluated many of the job functions and tasks the employees do during their work day to eliminate the amount of twisting and bending as a result of the data.
  • The airline connected the belts to their internal WIFI and allowed the data to stream real-time. The employees use the single sign on technology to allow for easy access to the modjoul system.

Analyze and improve

As a result of using the Modjoul SmartBelts, the airline has seen significant improvement from 2018 to 2019. On average, the material inspector group bent 61 times per day in 2018, with 15 of those bends occurring at angles greater than 60 ̊. So far in 2019, the average bend count for the material inspectors is 44 times per day, with 8 of these bends occurring at angles greater than 60 ̊ . This is a reduction in bends of nearly 28% and a reduction in bends >60̊ of45%.
